Francis Ford Coppola was born in 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in New York City. A key figure in New Hollywood cinema, Coppola directed the seminal "The Godfather" trilogy (1972-1990) and "Apocalypse Now" (1979), both of which are regarded as some of the greatest films ever made. During the tumultuous production of "Apocalypse Now," Coppola faced severe financial troubles and even offered to mortgage his house to complete the film.
